In this section of “My Freshman Year” Professor Nathan compares traditional American students to non tradition foreign students in the way they behave, hold friendships and other aspects of college life. At one point Nathan says "International students saw "individualism" and "independence" as characteristic not only of roommate interactions but of relations with family and friends as well”. I think this is trying to say that American college students are not as “connected” with their family members. For example Nathan said that a Mexican student found it uncommon that the American students called their parents once a week. This could be suggesting that American families as a whole don’t have the same level of communication with their families as other cultures. Later in the reading Nathan said that a student named Maria said "In Mexico, when someone is a friend, then regardless of the situation, even if I would get in trouble, I would help them. American people are always busy”. I personally disagree with this comment. I don’t think that your culture or country you are from fully determines how you would treat a friend. Once again, I feel that Professor Nathan’s research is inconclusive and way to generalized. She constantly compares one instance or a couple study’s she conducted to categorize an entire population. In conclusion I feel that American students and students from other countries have different ways of interacting with people although I believe that an individual persons home life growing up determines how they act toward others rather than where they are from.
ROSE 2005
I personally found this section boring and unrelated to our class at this point. I feel that it tells a story rather than giving us insightful information. Although I found this reading uninteresting I was able to find a quote I could elaborate on. Toward the end Rose says “for the subsequent work we create for them, for how we talk to them and about them, and for the words we use to describe what they do”. This statement made me think of a bigger meaning to what happens with “blue collar” workers in todays society. I feel like blue collar workers such as plumbers get less respect from some people because of the job title they hold. I find this to be a huge problem with society especially in the “new age” of computers and medicine. I think society attempts to place people in social classes based on what they do for a living or how much they make. This is a huge problem because all people no matter social status, income, sex, gender, race, or ethnicity should be treated the same by society. In conclusion I think that society is corrupt in the way we view people based solely on their occupation.
